A Spoiled Walk

BY KENNY WITTMANN

Through the years, I have developed a liking for an outdoor game that many in the world enjoy. This game is called golf. Despite my Cerebral Palsy I have managed to find my own unique swing and have used the specialty for about 7 years now. When golfers ask me what my handicap is I jokingly tell them “my legs”.  Last year my handicap factor rated by Golf Canada was 13.78. That is something I am very proud of because it is hard enough to break 100.

Years back I was able to walk every course I played until I went for surgery. After my surgery was done I was not able to endure the walking distances on a golf course anymore. This was back in the 2014-2015 season. I was still able to play as a lot of my friends had a license to drive the cart. The game of golf was a little different now considering I didn’t need to walk to my ball, but I was okay with it considering it gave me more energy for the shot ahead. Starting in 2015-16 I was able to get carts all on my own, and I have continued to enjoy the game I love.

KENNY WITTMANN – THE NEW ‘LEFTY

I am a lefty golfer and my favourite brand is Callaway. I use all Callaway products from driver, to my lowest iron. Saying that, my favourite PGA golfer is Phil Mickelson. Phil is also a lefty and plays with the Callaway brand. He is someone I look up to in the golf world for his great intimacy with the fans and great short game that he has.

As a parasport athlete, I love playing sports. I play wheelchair basketball as well as sledge hockey. I enjoy sitting down and playing sports but the game of golf has allowed me to stand up and play a sport that I really enjoy. It’s nice that I have an activity that allows me to concentrate, have fun, and be social with. This sport was once a great spoiled walk for me and it has turned into something I cannot drive away from. I promise to keep it on the cart path.
